Frequently Used Formulas

To  calculate  the mass of mild steel plate & flat:

Length X  Width X thickness X 7850kg

For Example:

  • For a 10mm plate @ 2400mm x 1700mm
  • 2.4 x 1.7 x 0.01 x 7850 = 320.28kg
  • For a 200 x 6 flat bar @ 1200mm
  • 1.2 x 0.2 x 0.006 x 7850 = 11.304kg

Note:

  • Most price books have an extra 2.5% added onto the weight of merchant bar as a rolling tolerance.
  • Add 2kg per square metre for floorplate.

To calculate the mass of aluminium:

Length x width x thickness x 2710kg

To calculate the mass of stainless steel:

Length x width x thickness x 8000kg

To calculate the mass of black round pipe & tube per metre:

Outside Diameter – wall thickness X wall thickness X 0.0246615

For Example:

  • For a 219.1mm diameter x 6.4mm wall thickness line pipe
  • 219.1 – 6.4 x 6.4 x 0.0246615 = 33.57kg/meter
  • For 25nb med blk pipe
  • 33.7 – 3.2 x 3.2 x 0.0246615 = 2.4kg/metre

Note:

  • Most price books have an extra 2.5% added onto the weight of pipe as rolling tolerance.

To calculate the mass of round bar per metre:

Diameter squared x 0.7854 x 7850 kg

For Example:

  • For 50mm round bar
  • 0.05 x 0.05 x 0.7854 x 7850 = 15.41kg/meter

To calculate the circumstance of a circle:

Diameter x 3.1416

For Example:

  • For a diameter of 350mm
  • 350 x 3.1416 = 1099.56mm

To calculate the diagonal length corner to corner in a square or rectangle: (Hypotenuse)

Length squared + breadth squared - then square root

For Example:

  • For a rectangle 1200mm x 2400mm
  • (1200 x 1200 = 1440000) + (2400 x 2400 = 5760000) = 7 200 000
  • 7200000 > square root = 2683.28mm
